Hater – a dating app based on mutual hatred for things

There is quite a number of dating apps available now, with Tinder being the most popular. They all have their own gimmicks, little things to distinguish them from the competition. I bet, though, that no other dating app is the same as Hater. This little gem of 21st century finds matches based not on what you and your possible lover like, but what you dislike. Upon creating your profile, the app asks you a set of questions on a wide array of topics. You can answer to every question in four ways – by liking, disliking, loving or hating it. Puppies? Love. Rash? Dislike. Terry Pratchett? ...

Gold is overrated. Olympic medals will be made of used smartphones

A very good, symbolic step in the direction of recycling. In order to make five thousand bronze, silver and gold medals almost eight tons of metal. Japanese, for they will be the host of the 2020 olympics (here is to hope we will live that long…), have decided that there is no point in using up valuable minerals when a readily available supply of recycle-able material is ready for the taking. Where will this material come from? Only one of, if not the most popular devices on our planet. This April, Japanese telecommunication shops and stores will begin to put out special boxes for ...

Ransomware in Google Play store; watch out!

The phenomenon of ransomware is, unfortunately, one already familiar to the PC users. Now, though, you can add another point to the list of Reasons Why The World Is Scary, as these malicious cyber-criminals have invaded the world of mobile devices. Short ago, an application called Energy Rescue was available on Google Play store. According to its description, it was supposed to help minimise the energy output of the phone, and in a way it did, for anyone who downloaded it probably never wanted to use her or his phone again. Behind the facade of a small, helpful app was a ransomware called ...

Evil Factory, a new retro-shooter on Android

I remember, if barely, the good old days of video gaming. Today it is all about either sparky AAA titles, with graphics out of this world and same mechanics over and over, or indie games, which are so niche they all start to look the same. Back in the 90’s, there was no triple A games, nor indie games. There were just games – you, your friend and Atari, Commodore, Pegasus or whatever ”computer” your parents spoiled you with were teaming up, putting int he cartridge and shooting up those pixels. Well, now we live in the 21st century, and apparently we have ran out of ...

Pokemon Go has made over one billion bucks, but the sales are dropping

Pokemon Go became the best-selling mobile game in the history, according to Sensor Tower, making more than one billion USD in nearly seven months. Second-best, Clash Royale (spin-off of Clash of Clans), made ”only” 550 millions in the same amount of time. All is not well, though, as Niantic’s (creators of the game) gigantic profits are slowing down significantly. Right now, the game makes roughly two million dollars a day, compared to the eighteen million in its peak. The interest in the game simply wore off, but Niantic plans to at least somewhat rectify it by releasing a ...

Meizu and OnePlus caught red-handed! Companies accused of tweaking their benchmark scores

Meizu Pro 6 Plus and OnePlus 3T smartphones have been found to have their benchmark scores tweaked to seem more efficient than they actually are. Reportedly, both companies’ misdeeds have been found out by XDA Developers. Without entering into technical details, both companies have, by different means, pushed their benchmark phones to a performance higher than the usual. While OnePlus spokesperson has officially admitted to the company cheating and promised to rectify the mistake by benchmarking 3T again, Meizu has yet to comment.Ouch… remember, children, always tell the truth! ...

Tinder for orangutans is a thing now. O tempora, o mores

Finding love can be hard, but 21st century technology helps us as much as it can. Well, not only us. As part of a ”Tinder for orangutans” experiment, Apenheul primate park will equip Samboja, a female orangutan, with a mobile device with pictures of male orangutans from around the world on it. The goal is for Samboja to select males that she finds attractive, so that they can be brought over to Apenheul for a little R&R. Orangutan’s interest in possible future partners is to be measured by her reaction to pictures shown – a long, deep gaze may be considered a ...

YubiKey – Facebook works on a new security measure

First, there were only passwords. Hackers quickly learned how to crack those, though. Then, the verification codes came. After entering a password, we would receive a verification code via an SMS or e-mail, with which we could open our precious account. Hackers learned how to get hold on our phones and e-mail boxes, so that they could get hold on these as well. That is why Facebook works on YubiKey. YubiKey is an USB module that takes place of a verification code – after entering your account’s password, you will be asked to enter YubiKey into your device’s USB port, after ...

Happy birthday to you… 35th anniversary of the first computer virus

Perhaps this is not the proper occasion to celebrate, but it is good to know anyway. Thirty five years ago one Richard Skrent (this surname sounds funny in Polish, trust me), then a zit-faced teenager living with his parents in the US, has created what is recognized as the first computer virus ever made. How did this evil progenitor of the modern Terror of the First World work? Elk Cloner, for that is its name, hooked itself to the DOS 3.3 OS and transmitted from computer to computer (or from Apple II to Apple II, to be precise) via a floppy disk (wow, floppy disks… I still remember ...
