Ransomware in Google Play store; watch out!

The phenomenon of ransomware is, unfortunately, one already familiar to the PC users. Now, though, you can add another point to the list of Reasons Why The World Is Scary, as these malicious cyber-criminals have invaded the world of mobile devices. Short ago, an application called Energy Rescue was available on Google Play store. According to its description, it was supposed to help minimise the energy output of the phone, and in a way it did, for anyone who downloaded it probably never wanted to use her or his phone again. Behind the facade of a small, helpful app was a ransomware called Charger. Charger’s job was to steal the user’s data (it could only get hold on one’s contacts and SMS, but ransomware bluffed and stated it has all the data) and them inform her/him that it will return it in return for 0.2 bitcoin (bitcoins is a relatively rarely used Internet currency. 0.2 bitcoin is a bit over two hundred dollars). Energy Rescue is no longer available for download from Google Play, but it is certain to have a number of successors, so be careful what you’re downloading. The question is, what will Google do about it? It can be reasoned that it is the company’s responsibility to grant its users safety from malware.
