iPhone was the most activated smartphone in the USA last quarter

Nowadays life is a bit hard for Apple. Company faces dozens of lawsuits and governments of three different countries are making inquiries into both the ”batterygate” case as well as the even more recent Meltdown and Spectre fiasco. For Apple, life was easier in the past… especially in the USA. According to the survey by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, iPhone was the most often activated (and, therefore, arguably the most popular) smartphone by Americans in the Q4 2017. During the time between October and December 2017, Apple’s smartphones accounted for 39% ...

”Ballistic Missile Threat Inbound”, or how to make a country panic by a misclick

So yeah, that happened. Last Saturday, a short-lived panic swept across the Hawaii (lately also known as a ”sh*tty country” thanks to the benevolent president Trump) when a country-wide warning of an inpending missile attack appeared on people’s phones. Thankfully the alert was false, and after fourty minutes of fearing for their lives, all Hawaiians have received a ”false alarm” notification. Phew. So, what exacly went wrong? A pretty prosaic thing, really. According to The Washington Post, Hawaii emergency employee has initiated an internal emergency tool ...

Apple shows us how many lawsuits can a company face at once

The answer is 46 plus three official government investigations. This is how much backlash is Apple facing right now for both ”batterygate”, issue of Apple slowing down older iPhones without user’s consent, and newest Meltdown and Spectre fiasco, where it turned out that Apple knew about these vulnerabilities for half an year and did nothing to prevent them. Most of the lawsuits are filed by private citizens (especially one USA citizen whom sues Apple for 999 bilion dollars). France and China have begun their investigations into Apple over the battery issue, while the USA ...

Leaked render of LG G7 shows a really bezel-less phones

We still do not know what will LG G7 be called, seeing how the G7 series is supposed to have its name changed. What we do know is some of the phone’s specs (Snapdragon 845 CPU among others) and, now, how is the phone supposed to look. Leaked from TigerMobiles, the above picture presents us with a smartphone that has almost no bezels. That is cool, sure, but I am sceptical – many such promises have been made before by smartphone developers, and very few of them came to pass. What else is there? Well, we have a dual-lens selfie shooter, probably a rear-placed fingerprint scanner ...

Google is cleaning up Play Store, or how 60 aps got infected with adult advertisement

Check Point, a cybersecurity company, has found a so-called Adult Swine malware in a number of Google Play Store’s apps. Malware’s main function was to display adult content ads whenever the infected app was turned on. Thankfully, Google’s reaction was quick, largely thanks to the fact that many of the apps infected were aimed towards children, e.g. McQueen Car Racing Game, Addon Pixelmon or Five Nights Survival Craft. Other than showing illicit ads, malware’s job was to convince the user to download the ”antivirus” app and agree to the a premium service. ...

Will Samsung shut down its production plants in Slovakia?

Samsung owns two factories in Slovakia, one manufacturing OLED panels parts and another assembling the screens. Soon though, these factories may be no more, as Samsung is threatening to shut down one of thems and is said to consider closing both. The reason is pretty prosaic, namely lack of workforce – seems like Slavs are not very interested in making us smartphones. Another option for Samsung is hiring foreigners, something that Slovakia government is not very keen on allowing, or so I heard. If closed, these two factories will probably end up being relocated to a more work-friendly ...
