”Game of Thrones” fans, beware. Hackers are using you to spread malware

Proofpoint, a company dealing in cybersecurity, issues a warning. According to their knowledge, hackers are using curiosity of thousands of GoT fans worldwide to infect their PC’s with viruses.

Lets say that you are a ”Game of Thrones” fan. One day you open your mail box and find a message with a title like ”Watch the newest Game of Thrones episode before premiere!”. You open the message and see a file that you can download from it. You do so. Then you open the file, thinking it is the newest GoT episode… and no, it is not – instead you have just installed a random and probably dangerous malware on your computer.

It is possible that the men behind this attack are the ones who have stolen the last GoT episode or two from HBI a few days ago. It is more probable, though, that these hackers are an unaffiliated group, simply preying on the guillable show fans (although how can anyone who watches GoT not see such an obvious trap coming is unknown to me). If one day you open your mailbox and find a supposed TV show spoiler there, do yourself a favour and just delete the whole thing.
