Apple’s new 4G LTE iPad still limits FaceTime to Wi-Fi

Despite featuring support for speedy 4G LTE service in the cellular version of its new iPad, Apple is still limiting the FaceTime video chat feature to Wi-Fi connections, a holdover from the 3G versions of the iPad that were constrained for bandwidth. One would think that with the greater bandwidth afforded by LTE (and early reviews show the iPad takes good advantage of it), Apple would allow FaceTime over cellular connections. The old argument against it was that FaceTime over 3G would offer a poor user experience, but it’s hard to believe that would be the case with LTE. Still, FaceTime may consume a fair amount of data, and using it on LTE might eat up an iPad user’s limited data plan faster than they realize. Still, that would seem to be a decision best left up to the consumer.
