Apple Asks EU to Help It Settle Motorola Patent Suits

Apple has requested that the European Commission intervene and help settle its standards-essential patent dispute with Motorola. In a regulatory filing Motorola said, “On February 17, the company received a letter from the European Commission notifying it that the Commission has received a complaint against Motorola Mobility by Apple regarding the enforcement of Motorola’s standards-essential patents against Apple allegedly in breach of MMI’s FRAND (fair and reasonable) commitments.” The European Commission recently turned its eye on Samsung and is looking into whether or not the firms involved are abusing their standards essential patents in the context of the ongoing legal battles between a number of smartphone makers.
