Nokia Moves Up Lumia 800 Firmware Update

Nokia today indicated that the firmware update planned to reach the Lumia 800 later this spring has been moved up and will be pushed out starting today. The newest software version is 1600.2487.8107.12070 and improves battery life, power management, camera performance, and in-call audio performance. This update does not, however, bring mobile hotspot or data tethering features to the Lumia 800. Nokia and Microsoft are still working to add those features. Microsoft, Nokia to put $24 million into app development for Windows Phone

Nokia and Microsoft have announced that each company will invest 9 million EUR (US$12 million) into a mobile application development program at Aalto University in Finland over the next three years. The new AppCampus program will focus on creating mobile apps for the Windows Phone ecosystem, but it will also produce apps for Nokia’s S40 and Symbian-based phones. Nokia recently released a beta application called Play To, which uses DLNA technology to allow Lumia smartphone users to share media from their device to other DLNA-compatible equipment. Microsoft and Nokia today pledged to contribute $23.88 million to a new mobile application development program at Aalto University. The goal of the investment is to help spur the creation of mobile applications for the Windows Phone, Symbian, and Series 40 ecosystems. Nokia has released Creative Studio, a new app for the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 Windows Phone smartphones that will let users capture panoramic images and share them with others. Users can snap four consecutive images with the app that will then be automatically stitched together to form one panoramic scene. Nokia has released updated versions of its Drive, Maps, and Transport apps for Lumia smartphones in the Windows Phone Marketplace. Nokia says the new Drive app offers offline capabilities for navigation when there is no cellular coverage, while Maps gains the ability to save a list of favorite places as well as display traffic information.
