Motorola to Cut 800 Jobs Ahead of Google Acquisition

Motorola indicated via a legal filing that it is eliminating 800 jobs and closing at least one facility in ahead of its pending acquisition by Google. The charges associated with the job cuts and facility closing will cost Motorola 427 million and $4 million, respectively. News Motorola ships 11.6 million phones in Q3 2011, posts smaller loss

Yesterday Motorola Mobility announced its financial and business performance results for Q3 of 2011. In the report, the company stated that it had revenues of $3.3 billion, which is up 11 percent from Q3 in 2010. The revenue came mostly from the sale of its mobile devices, of which it shipped 11.6 million units. 4.8 million of those devices shipped were smartphones, and 100,000 of them were XOOM tablets. Verizon Wireless today announced that it is offering the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update to the Motorola Droid Pro and the MOtorola Droid 2 Global. Both phones will receive the new Gingerbread operating system from Google (not Ice Cream Sandwich), which includes a number of new features as well as bug fixes and tweaks. Sprint today announced the addition of the Motorola Admiral to its roster of CDMA-based DirectConnect handsets. The Admiral is the first Android 2.3 Gingerbread handset to take advantage of Sprint’s DirectConnect service, says the carrier, and it features a 1.2GHz processor, 3.1-inch VGA display, QWERTY keyboard and 3G.
