Lixin Cheng, CEO of the United States’ division of ZTE, officially announced the ”late 2018 or early 2019” arrival of ZTE’s first 5G smartphone. Exact date of release depends on, quote, ”availability of 5G networks and the requisite chipsets”. Both Verizon and AT&T have announced that they will be rolling out their own 5G networks by the end of the year, so the 5G connectivity of ZTE will actually be useful. T-Mobile wants to do the same by 2020. ...

Samsung Galaxy A8 now available in the United Kingdom
Although from only one retailer – Clove. The release is not perfect, unfortunately. Firstly, the device’s price is £480, which is higher than if bought from an European retailer (€500 + shipping). Secondly, A8 is sold with an European charger, which means that the UK user has to buy an UK charger to be able to recharge the phone. Units with the proper UK charger should arrive later this year.Specifications are available here. Tweet Vote on HN ...

American officials are taking a closer look at Apple
It is old news that Apple is now facing twenty six lawsuits regarding the battery downgrading scandal. ”New news” is that not only private citizens have an axe to grind with Apple; senator John Thune, president of the Federal Trade Commission, have issued a letter to Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, where he touches on a few subjects that are mighty uncomfortable for the bitten apple company, like:– why did Apple not react to a large number of downgraded battery complaints before the downgrade was indisputably proven by a third party, and– why is Apple charging, even if the ...
US HTC U11 receives a large update
This one is a biggie! Weighing 737.5 megabytes, software update 2.42.617.1… has a suspiciously small changelog. All we are seemingly getting in it are the December Android Security patch and some unspecified system enhancements. There must be more to this update than meets the eye, but so far we do not know what could it be. We will let you know when we learn more.Anyway, the update is available over the air, but it may be some time before it reaches your region. Remember to make sure that your phone is charged and connected to wi-fi before downloading ...
Netherland Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) receives its January security update

Right now the update is available only for the unbranded models. We do not know when will it become more widely available. Tweet Vote on HN ...
Apple iOS 11.2.2 greatly throttles the performance of some phones
Like, really greatly. 50% of performance drain kind of greatly. Apple has recently released an iOS 11.2.2 update for iPhones. The update was supposed to protect the phones against a newly infamous Spectre vulnerability. Apple predicted that it will cause the phones’ performance to drop, but numbers estimated were no bigger than 2.5% drop. Well… one Melvin Mughal, a seemingly well-known tech developer, has calculated that the performance of his iPhone 6 dropped by roughly 40% after downloading the latest iOS 11.2.2 update, and there are people who report losing even more working ...
Pokemon Go drops support for most iPhone 5 series and earlier. Reason? Too old OS
In a move that may annoy some of the less modernized iPhone users, Niantic, developer of Pokemon Go, decided to stop supporting devices that cannot run iOS 11. That includes iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPad mini, iPad 4, iPod touch 5 and earlier devices. iPhone 5s users ae lucky, as that phone supports iOS 11. This is what Niantic had to say on the subject:”In an upcoming update to Pokémon GO, we will end support for Apple devices not capable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models. This change is a result of improvements to Pokémon GO that push the application beyond ...
