Motorola today announced an approximate schedule for planned upgrades to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its devices. In the U.S., Motorola said that the Atrix 2, Atrix 4G, Photon 4G, and Xyboards 8.2/10.1 will receive Ice Cream Sandwich some time in the third quarter of 2012. Motorola is still in the “planning and evaluation phase” with respect to Android 4.0 for the bulk of Motorola’s existing smartphones. That includes recent launches such as the Droid 4, Droid RAZR MAXX, Droid RAZR, Droid Bionic, Droid 3 X2, and Electrify. After the planning phase, Motorola will need to complete the development phase and testing phase before the updates become available to end users. Motorola has already updated the original Xoom to Ice Cream Sandwich. A significant portion of Motorola’s older devices, such as the Droid 2, Bravo, Defy, and others won’t be updates beyond Android 2.2 or 2.3.
