The trash can in question is called Oscar and it is the creation of the Initiative AI company. Basically it is a trash bin equipped with a set of cameras and an AI; these tools allow it to recognize the kind of trash that someone wants to throw inside it and suggest the correct bin to put it into. What is more, if you ignore Oscar’s suggestions, the device will make you feel guilty by scolding you.

Initiative AI collects data that Oscar needs by photographing litter; so far the company has taken over a million pictures of various trash and debris. The whole point of Oscar is to help segregate and recycle trash; as the US can no longer ship their trash to China, that country needs new methods of either getting rid of or, better yet, utilizing it.
