”Dune!” mobile game collects a lot of info about its user, and it is not the only one

It is time for more Terror From The Web stories. Redactors of Polish website Androidcompl found out that an extremely popular mobile game Dune! (5 million downloads and still going) possesses a large number of functions in its system which only tasks are to collect as much private information about the user as possible. Among the info ”stolen” is the app user’s country and localization, phone’s OS and phone number, battery level & other. The app is also connected to the third-party libraries which may be able to find and gather much more data.

That does not sound good, does it? No, it does not. The big issue, though, is that, as you probably know, Dune is not the only app that does thigs like this. Among the more ”spy-ish” apps one can recall, Xtrade comes to mind – an online CFD trading app that was also moonlighting as an ”info provider” for various third-party companies, sharing things like lists of apps installed on their phones or the phones’ screen resolution (!). Many of these apps actually inform the user about these actions in their Terms of Conduct, but many do not…

The moral of the story? Do not download apps that you do not need, and always read up on the ones you actually do need.
