Director of ”Paranormal Activity” creates a social app. Scary?

Oren Peli, writer and director of the infamous ”Paranormal Activity”, works on an app that will allow its users to find, create and join events in their neighbourhood. Application is called Spot. Surprised? Do not be. Before venturing into the creepy movies industry, Mr. Peli worked as a computer software programmer (according to WikiPedia, he was one of the developers of Photon Paint, a graphic program for Amiga), so you can see him making an app less as a weird curio and more like the man going back to his roots.

Well, that is all dandy, but by now you probably want to learn what and how exacly will Spot do. The app allows the user to create events in one of four categories: sports, hobbies, singles events and community events. Events created by other Spot users can be found with a search by keyword or by looking for them on the map. These events can be made public or private; undesirables can be given a warning or a ban (although we doubt a ban will make it physically impossible for them to come by). Spot account will be created by connecting it to your Facebook or Google account. App will be free, presumably making money with advertisement and deals with local businesses.

What do you guys think? I think that such an app is a cool idea, but there are probably many like that already on the market. Hopefully Spot will turn out to be a success, and we will get a good way of making friends, acquaintances and loved ones via Internet.
