Injures suffered after a headphone exploded mid-flight

Okay, I have made fun of exploding devices, mainly phones, in the past, but this story is not funny in the least. Long story short, a woman was travelling via an airplane going to Australia, sleeping in her chair while music poured in from her headphones. Suddenly, she woke up to a sound of explosion. Feeling a burning sensation around her head, she grabbed her headphones and threw them on the floor – then it turned out that what blew up was her own headset. Airplane crew quickly put out the burning, melted device and gave the woman a basic treatment.

ATSB, Australian Transport Safety Bureau, says it is looking into the cause of the incident, pointing out the faulty battery as a possible culprit. For reasons unknown, the manufacturer of the device has not been revealed.

Wow. I am very sorry for the woman that had to go through this. Sure, worse things happen at sea, but being burned by your own headphones, as well as inconveniencing the whole flight (smell must’ve NOT been pleasant) is no picnic.
