Smartphone blows inches away from the owner's face

Yet another mobile device threatened somebody’s life. Ex-cop David Millar from Larkhall, Scotland, was the proud owner of Galaxy S6. He, his partner Samantha and two 13-year old sons were fast sleep in their beds when the device burst into flames on the man’s bedside, almost next to his face. As the man reported to the Daily Record newspaper, ”Samantha and I were asleep when I was woken up by what I can only describe as an explosion. There was a flashing light and smell of burning. The flames burned into a book the phone was sitting on”.

Casualties of the event include a burnt phone, slightly burnt fingers as Millar picked the phone up and threw it into a sink, destroyed book and nightstand that the device was lying on, and bedsheet specked with bits of plastic – not to mention a good night’s rest of the whole family. Overall damage is worth around 1500 pounds. An O2 store that deals in Samsung phones have offered a replacement phone but, understandingly, Millar refuses another Galaxy S6 model. The shop, in turn, refuses to offer a different model. The official statement of the store is that ”We offered to have the phone sent back to us so we can assess the damage and replace it with the same model if necessary but this was refused. We’ll be happy to arrange this again.” It is noteworthy that the phone was charging when the incident took place.

I said it once and I will say it again. Perhaps the whole ”exploding phones” business is overblown, but it is difficult to say that it does not happen, as it clearly does. Just to be safe, folks, don’t charge your phones at night.
