Four year prison sentence for an US-based cellular fraud

Crime does not pay (unless it does, but shh), one and Edwin Fana learned that the hard way. The 37 years old citizen of the United States has admitted to “conspiracy to commit fraud, aggravated identity theft, access device fraud, and wire fraud”. Quite a list, but what exacly did the man do? Long story short, Edwin Fana was a part of a 3-man team that dealed in cloning people’s phones and making international calls with them. Fana’s part of the job was to run a front call center, which allowed him to acquire phonen information. He then reprogrammed people’s devices and forwarded their information to his colleagues, Ramon Batista and Jose Santiago, who were then making expensive calls to countries like Cuba, Jamaica etc. The three (evil-cellular?) musketeers would make profit from payments forwarded to cellular service providers whose calls were routed – but without paying the cost of completing those calls.

Most of the affected phones’ customers did not suffer any financial damage, and those who did will be reimbursed. If all goes well for Fana, he will do his time by 2020.
