Research In Motion today indicated during its quarterly earnings press call that its next-generation BlackBerry 10 smartphones will not appear until “the latter part of calendar 2012.” RIM had previously suggested that they’d reach the market in the first half of 2012, so the delay is a significant one. RIM said the reason for the delay is that it is waiting for the availability of certain dual-core processors, which won’t reach mass production until mid-2012. RIM is currently transitioning its BlackBerries from BB6/7 to BB10, which will merge features of the current BlackBerry smartphone software and that of the PlayBook’s QNX platform. RIM reported earnings of $265 million, a 71% drop over the year-ago quarter. RIM sold 14.1 million BlackBerries. In response, RIM’s co-CEOs, Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis said that they would reduce their salaries to $1 per year.
