Nokia to Discontinue Contacts Back-Up Service

Nokia today said that it plans to shut down the Nokia Contacts web site on January 24, 2012. Nokia Contacts allowed users fo Symbian smartphones to sync their contact data with Nokia’s servers for safe keeping. Nokia says that the change won’t affect the contacts stored on user devices, but Nokia recommends that users who want to back their contacts up to a web service export them from Nokia Contacts and choose Hotmail, Microsoft Outlook 2010, Yahoo! ITC to Revisit HTC vs. Apple Decision

The U.S. International Trade Commission has decided to review a decision made by a judge in October that cleared Apple of violating four of HTC’s smartphone patents. The ITC is going to revisit one of the four patents, which pertains to “technology for looking up and quickly dialing phone numbers and different techniques for managing power consumption on portable electronic devices.” HTC appealed the October ruling and the ITC has agreed to reexamine the judge’s decision. Cricket Communications today announced the addition of the Huawei Mercury to its roster of Android smartphones. The Mercury in driven by a 1.4GHz processor and includes a 4-inch FWVGA touch display; 8-megapixel camera with autofocus, LED flash, and HD video capture; a VGA user-facing camera; and Wi-Fi, Stereo Bluetooth, and mobile hotpot for up to five other devices. Verizon Promises Signal Fix for Galaxy Nexus

ITC Says HTC Violated Apple Patents

The U.S. International Trade Commission today ruled that HTC has violated a 1999 Apple smartphone patent pertaining to how computers talk to one another The ITC ordered that HTC be banned from importing some of its products, though the ban will not commence until April 19. HTC will be allowed to import refurbished products to meet repair claims, but no new products will be allowed to enter the U.S. once ban begins. Samsung Promises Android 4.0 Update for Galaxy Range

Samsung today announced that it will provide a select number of its Galaxy-branded smartphones and tablets with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Samsung said the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note will receive Android 4.0 during the first quarter of 2012. Other devices expected to be upgraded include the Galaxy S II LTE, Note, R, Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9, Tab 7.7, and Tab 7.0 Plus. HTC Unfazed By ITC Ruling

HTC called Monday’s ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission a “victory,” despite the fact that the ITC found HTC guilty of violating a smartphone patent held by Apple. HTC claims a victory because the company was faulted on only one of ten Apple patents in question. With regard to the impending ban on some of its phones, the company said in statement on Tuesday, “Since the infringing elements identified by the ITC involve and impact only a very minimal part of the user interface, we will remove it as soon as possible and sell non-infringing products.” ...
