QNX to Be BlackBerry’s Foundation for a Decade

Research In Motion CEO Thorsten Heins today said that the QNX platform will be the basis of RIM’s mobile strategy for the next decade. He reiterated in a call to press this morning that the company believes in the strengths of QNX and the PlayBook 2.0 operating system. Nokia Siemens Scores Massive Funding

Nokia Siemens Networks has received approximately $1.56 billion in new funding from a collection of European and U.S. banks. Citing a source familiar with Nokia Siemens’ plans, Reuters reports that the company sought $1.96 billion in funding, but had to settle for the lesser amount due to current market conditions. Parent companies Nokia and Siemens last year said they would no longer contribute funding to the joint venture, which announced job cuts of 17,000 in November. Sony Intros New Back-Illuminated CMOS Sensor for Phones

Sony today announced a new back-illuminated CMOS image sensor for smartphones, tablets, and other devices. Sony says that this sensor was made by laying the “pixel section containing formations of back-illuminated structure pixels onto chips containing the circuit section for signal processing.” According to Sony, the chief benefit of this design is to reduce the size of the image sensor to be installed in end-user devices. Verizon Wireless has released the latest addition to its BlackBerry portfolio, the Curve 9370. The Curve 9370 features the BlackBerry 7 OS and has a 2.44-inch display, a QWERTY keyboard, and a 5 megapixel camera. HTC to Wipe Carrier IQ from Sprint Phones

HTC is preparing to release updated software that will remove Carrier IQ’s software from its Android smartphones sold by Sprint. In a statement provided to The Verge, HTC said, “HTC can confirm that we’re working with Sprint to provide maintenance releases that will remove Carrier IQ and provide security enhancements and bug fixes beginning in January.” Sprint had requested that its device partners make such updates available. Samsung Says Bada-Tizen Tie-Up Still Being Weighed

Samsung has retreated from earlier statements it made regarding plans to merge its bada operating system with Intel’s Tizen operating system. In a statement provided to AllThingsD, Samsung said, “Samsung and other members of Tizen Association have not made a firm decision regarding the merge of bada and Tizen. We are carefully looking at it as an option to make the platforms serve better for customers.” Samsung said that it believes bada will play a role in “democratizing” smartphone platforms, and that it will continue to support open-source projects. ...

Motorola Invests in Social Networking Company

Motorola Mobility Ventures today announced that it has made an undisclosed investment in an Israeli start-up called Shaker, which recreates social experiences online. Shaker’s service hooks into user’s Facebook accounts and “allows people to meet around mutual friends and shared interests.” The service is currently only available in Israel, but is launching in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2012. Motorola’s investment will help Shaker bring its service to U.S. smartphones. ...

Samsung SCH-R375 Headed to TracFone

Samsung recently published information about the SCH-R375c, a mono-block QWERTY phone that is intended for TracFone’s network. According to Samsung, the r375 is based on a Java operating system and includes a full keyboard for messaging, a 1.3 megapixel camera, and stereo Bluetooth.
