U.S. Cellular’s First LTE Device Isn’t a Phone

U.S. Cellular today announced the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. It is the first device to be sold by U.S. Cellular that can access its nascent LTE 4G network. The LTE network is active in just a handful of markets so far, including Madison and Milwaukee, Wisc.; Wichita Falls and Lawton, Okla.; Portland, Houlton, Augusta, and Bangor, Me.; Greenville and Elizabeth City, N.C.; and Des Moines, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, and Davenport, Iowa. AT&T Delivers Ice Cream Sandwich to HTC Vivid

AT&T has begun distributing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the HTC Vivid smartphone. In addition to the new system software, the update also adds Sense 3.6, Beats Audio, and more Bluetooth profile support. Nokia Offering DLNA-Based ‘Play To’ App to Lumia Phones

Nokia recently released a beta application called Play To, which uses DLNA technology to allow Lumia smartphone users to share media from their device to other DLNA-compatible equipment. To start, the application can share photos and video, but not music. Nokia plans to add music-sharing support at a later time. Research In Motion is offering an updated beta version of its BlackBerry Music product to Beta Zone testers. New features of the social music service include the ability to favorite songs, favorite contacts, and see the favorite songs of those contacts. Huawei Fusion Available As an AT&T GoPhone

AT&T recently began selling the Huawei Fusion via its GoPhone prepaid service. The Fusion is an Android 2.3 Gingerbread smartphone that has a 3.5-inch display with 320 x 480 pixels. It includes a 3.2-megapixel camera with video capture; microSD support up to 32GB; 3G, Bluetooth 2.1, and an FM radio; and a number of AT&T-branded apps and services on board. Research In Motion today said that it plans to distribute a limited number of BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices to developers who attend an upcoming developer event to be held by RIM. RIM insists that the devices are not final BlackBerry 10 handsets and are not running final BlackBerry 10 software. Instead, they are running modified PlayBook OS and are meant to help developers create and test BlackBerry 10 applications ahead of the platform’s planned launch later this year. Microsoft and Nokia to Invest $24M In App Ecosystem

Microsoft and Nokia today pledged to contribute $23.88 million to a new mobile application development program at Aalto University. The goal of the investment is to help spur the creation of mobile applications for the Windows Phone, Symbian, and Series 40 ecosystems. The new AppCampus within Aalto University will offer “support, training in mobile technology, design and usability, and funding to create innovative new mobile apps and services.” Nokia and Microsoft believe the program will attract developers from around the world.
