Apple and Samsung are perhaps the greatest adversaries on the mobile phone market; hence why it is no surprise that one does not want to depend on the other. Unfortunately for Apple, that is exacly what the company has to do right now. As you have probably heard, Apple depends on Samsung to provide a sufficient amount of OLED displays for it to use in its iPhones. Well, it seems like Apple has had just about enough of having to pay its competition. According to a Korean publication ET News, Apple has obtained a large amount of chemical vapor deposition machines, which are an important tool in producing OLED panels, with an intention of installing them in their own panel line in Taiwan. This does not mean that Apple will immediately cut all OLED-related connections to Samsung – what company wants is, probably, to become at least partially independent in order to avoid situations like Samsung postponing iPhone release due to the need of their own Galaxy devices.
Apple will probably not manufacture its own raw components, instead licensing the equipment to other manufacturers. Apple may also decide to buy OLEDs from other sources – reportedly, company is in talks with LG about that matter.
