Back in January 2019 one Christoph Schied, an ex-employee of NVidia, have released a mod for Quake 2. That mod, called Q2VKPT, upgraded the game’s lightning to more modern standards. It now seems that NVidia saw Schied’s work and liked it quite a bit, because the company has just announced that it will release an official mod like that, only better. NVidia’s official mod is called Quake II RTX and will be a bundle of updated textures, animations & other things as well as, most importantly, new lightning, shadows and reflection techniques that will be supported by the newest ray tracing tech. Current stage of Quake II RTX can be seen at this video.
