Long story short? Yep, it was the batteries. Both lines of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 - the first one, released by Samsung SDI, and the second one by Amperex Technology - had faults in them. The first batches' batteries defect was a design flaw in the upper right corner, which caused the positive and negative electrodes to touch, which created heat inside the accumulator. The second batch were incorrectly welded, with their welding penetrating the insulation around the batteries, which, again, caused the electrodes to touch and created heat.
