Wow – Sony promises us a 48mpx camera

The IMX586 sensor is supposed to not only have more megapixels than any smartphone camera in the history, but also make the sharpest pictures on the market. People in the know-how foresee a few issues with these claims, though. They believe that too many megapixels of the sensor will make it so that the small pixels do not catch enough light, which in turn will considerably lower the the quality of the pictures. This problem can be bypassed by equipping the camera sensor with a 4x Bayer filter (a net of basic colour filters which make four pixels of the same colour connect into one larger pixel), as well as by the algorithm that allows every pixel to collect information from three nearby pixels. Whether or not Sony will manage to pull this off is to be seen. Another good thing about the IMX586 sensor is to be its small size (8 milimeters diagonal), which will allow it to fit inside the smartphone with no bulge.

IMX586 sensors will hit the market this September. We do not know if any companies have already ordered any.
