Analysts from the British Strategy Analytics Inc. believe that in the next few years we will see a major outflow of console users, who will instead content themselves with playing on their smartphones. The analysts’ belief is that we tend to abandon unwieldy and cumbersome items for the more complex and compact. Makes sense: walkmen were abandoned in favour of MP3’s, which in turn were dropped when smartphones emerged. Development of fast Internet connection will also help smartphone gaming. The upcoming 5G standard will make game streaming common and make the consoles with their own memory obsolete. The only thing, according to them, that might keep consoles relevant is the controller. Smartphones, with their few buttons and touchscreen, cannot fulfill the role of a controller well, and carrying with yourself one to plug it into the smartphone defeats the purpose of a mobile, un-cumbersome device.
