Swiss town replaces its church bell with ringtones, or where is your god now

Lucerne, Switzerland. A church bell of the town’s small catholic church is being renovated, but the faithful still need their ol’ and trusty bell to let them know when it is noon. How did the church solve this issue? It asked the, of all people, art students of the nearby college for help, and the students kind of delivered. What was their solution? Why, to install a loudspeaker in the church’ tower and have it blast smartphone ringtones, of course. What did you expect? Ringtones played by the church include the iPhone’s highly recognizable Marimba tune, which is certain to make at least some of Lucerne residents reach for their phones every half an hour.

Ringtones will sound in Lucerne until June 31st. If the bell is not fixed by that time, my personal nomination for the new ”church-tone” is ”Hunger” by Spectre General.
