Apple received $6.6 million fine in Australia for bricking a number of devices

Apple has to pay nine million Australian dollars, or over six and a half million US bucks. The company lost a legal case to the consumer rights group. The case was related to how the company reacted after iOS updates bricked devices that had been repaired by third party service providers. Long story short, around 275 Apple owners in Australia have been denied a free repair of their broken phones between February 2015 and 2016 because they have had their phones fixed by third parties before. Australian court has ruled that Apple’s decision was in breach of Australian consumer law and fined the company:

”If a product is faulty, customers are legally entitled to a repair or a replacement under the Australian Consumer Law, and sometimes even a refund. Apple’s representations led customers to believe they’d be denied a remedy for their faulty device because they used a third party repairer”.
