New Facebook function, or how FB tries to be Tinder

Facebook is going through a number of changes and additions lately. Many of them can be summed up by sighing and saying ”Why bother? FB is good as it is”. Such was my reaction when I heard today’s news.

The new function works in a way similiar to Tinder. Every Facebook user is said to receive a list of people he or she can hit on – it is uncertain whether this will just be your friends list or a new list somehow concocted by the portal itself. Next to every person there will be ”to date” and ”not to date” options. If you decide to try to ”date” someone, that person will only see that if she or he chooses to ”date” you as well. Otherwise, no one will ever know the other person was interested. That way only couples interested in one another will know they want to hook up, and no-lifes with fat bellies and blackheads and no friends will stay just as forever alone as they used to be… *sniff*.

On the one hand, that new dating function sounds silly – oh, look, FB becomes a new Tinder, what next? Facebook-branded condoms? On the other hand, it will most certainly be a source of solid, low-entry entertainment, especially if one enjoys teen drama. And if someone somehow manages to get a date this way? All the better. Right now, this FB-Tinder function is only available as a beta version, only in Canada and New Zealand and only as a phone app.
