Big Eyed iPhones, or how Apple is said to order over 12mpx camera modules for 2018's phone

According to The Digitimes, Apple has placed a large order high-resolution (over 12mpx) camera modules. Order has been issued to Largan Precision, Taiwan-based company, and will be fulfilled by Largan’s newest factory, currently finishing construction in Taichung, Taiwan. That factory is said to be able to chuck out 600 million lens modules per month, which is reportedly the only speed that meets Apple’s yield rate requirement. Production is said to begin on October 2017.

This move is something of a change of course for Apple. That company usually avoided high-resolution cameras, seeing how high-res creates quality problems when paired with large displays. Times they are a changing, I guess. Perhaps iPhone 9’s display will be smaller than its predecessor?
