iPhone 8 may come equipped with rear-facing 3D sensor for improved camera and AR features

This news comes from Fast Company, the ”world’s leading progressive business media brand”. According to FC, Apple is fully embracing the Augmented Reality technology by featuring a 3D sensor to aid both AR and other camera features of their upcoming iPhone 8 smartphone.

Fast Company’s report states that Apple’s 3D laser system sensor will improve Iphone 8’s depth detection for augmented reality. This will allow the company to improve the precision of its ARKit (Augmented Reality Kit) applications, as well as improving its camera’s autofocus. According to Apple, this is how the feature will work:

” VCSEL laser systems calculate the distance the light travels from the laser to the target and back to the sensor, and generate a Time of Flight (TOF) measurement. The system consists of a source (the VCSEL laser), a lens, detector (sensor), and a processor.”

Feature will reportedly cost ”about $2 per phone”. Report itself confirms what many have already believed Apple will do, namely focus on featuring more and more advanced AR technologies in its devices. Are you excited about the possible applications of the AR, or do you think it to be a gimmick that will be forgotten in an year or two? Let us know.
