A citizen of Hong Kong has left her phone to charge during the night and went to bed. She was roused from her sleep by a sound of explosion and the sight of her was-phone now a burning heap of plastic. Fortunately, the small fire was quickly put out. There is a number of opinions on the whys and hows of the incident; some blame an ingenuine charger being used (the owner of the phone reports that she was using an iPad charger); others believe it is the fault of a difference in charging intensity. Apple’s official stance, shared with the media by a company’s engineer, is that it was probably caused by a damaged recharger component.

Whichever may be the case, please, don’t charge your phones during the night. I know it’s convenient, but also slightly dangerous.
